I said that to one of my accountability partners, and she told me… “Oh, well, I only speak one.” It made me realize that speaking Spanish (my mother language), English (my second language), and Portuguese (my third language) was not something I should minimize.
From those languages, I am quite grateful to know how to write and speak English, as it has significantly increased the number of jobs I can have, and I have met wonderful people all over the world.
I have also been a bit ashamed of my perceived lack of ability in Portuguese. I thought it would never help me as I can’t even understand the songs in that language. However, once I was talking with a client, and his parents were around, but he didn’t want them to understand what he was talking about, so he switched from English to Portuguese. We held a quite complex conversation in Portuguese, and that made my day 😀
Learning languages always benefits us, sometimes just in ways we don’t expect. I’ll keep learning Portuguese in Duolingo (my surprising main source of learning). What about you? How many languages do you speak, and which languages do you want to learn?
