A black cat adopted us at the end of 2014 when she just entered our house and decided to live there even if she was terrified of us. I named her “Chimuela” because Chimuelo is the name of the Toothless dragon in the movie How to Train Your Dragon. She is black and has beautiful green eyes, so it was a good option for a name, even if she had all her teeth.

We fed her, petted her when she allowed us, and slowly earned her trust. I made sure to get her spayed so she wouldn’t have kittens. She was still a teenage cat when she got the surgery (5-6 months old). After the surgery, I made sure to take care of her and clean the wound, and I think that made her trust me even more.
She started sleeping with me some days of the week. Somedays, she would start crying at 3 am (of course), so I would open my door and let her in. When I moved to Colombia, I was sad about leaving behind my life in Venezuela, and part of my life was Chimuela. Mom says that when I left, Chimuela would wander in front of my room’s door, and my brother said that once he was there smoking a cigarette, and when Chimuela entered the room and saw him, she got terrified and ran away. Her behavior changed as well, as she spent more time outside the house, and I think that Chimuela behaved that way because I left (maybe her personality just changed? Who knows).
After three years, I could finally return home for three weeks. I was very excited to see my family again, and I won’t lie, I was excited to see Chimuela as well. You would think she would have gotten excited to see me, but she didn’t. She panicked when I arrived, hid, and wouldn’t come close to me for days. I had to earn her trust as if I had never met her.
Here’s where I answer the daily prompt. I wish Chimuela knew I was the same person who took care of her after the surgery and who would let her sleep in her bed. I wish she could understand why I’ve left her and that she wouldn’t be afraid of me. Nevertheless, I still love her 🙂 It doesn’t matter if my love is no longer reciprocated, and I hope to visit my family (she is part of it) this year as well.
