Our mind and consciousness are wonderful and sometimes… feel almost magical. Thoughts feel ethereal as if they came out of nowhere, but all thoughts originate from the complex machine that our brain is (well, not a machine but an organ, but you get my point). Isn’t it incredible how a network of neurons can make us who we are, think, love, hate, enjoy, suffer, and much more?
It’s marvelous. However, despite how interesting our brains can be, they are not exempt from defects, bugs, issues, diseases, etc. Many people still think that depression is not real or that it can be easily cured with a more active lifestyle, essential oils, or just “getting over it.” Now, I wish that was the case and that life was more simple, but it isn’t.

Depression is a disease. Yes, it can be transitory, but it is still a disease. It’s also one that consumes people from the inside out and can be deathly. Some people might cure their depression by acquiring a more active lifestyle, getting more sunshine, and powering through it. However, that might not work for everyone. Some people might need medication, therapy, lifestyle changes or all of those combined.
If a friend or a relative shares with you that they have depression, encourage them to visit their doctor. Don’t instantly assume they are lying, faking it or something like that. Don’t tell them they just need to walk in a park or in a forest. Remember that we are talking about a complex disease, which is affected by genes, the environment, the experiences lived by the person, and many other factors.
If you are depressed, try to remember that there’s nothing to be ashamed of. Please give yourself a chance and get help. Start with small steps. Again, give yourself a chance. You deserve it.
